Area 5 Centennial Bell Lunch - May 13, 2004

The Centennial Bell arrived in Hong Kong on May 4, 2004, and made its treasured appearance at the Area 5 Centennial Bell Lunch on May 13 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Central, Hong Kong.

Similar to the Olympic torch, five Rotary Centennial bells are being circulated to Rotary clubs in every Rotary country during 2004. The bells have started their journeys since the last RI Convention in Brisbane, Australia, in June 2003. One will travel to the first 100 clubs which joined Rotary International and are located in North America. The four others will travel to the first Rotary club formed in each country of four regions: Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Europe.

On May 4, the Asia Pacific bell visited the Rotary Club of Hong Kong, which was chartered in February 1931 as the first club in Hong Kong. On May 14, the bell visited the Rotary Club of Macau which was chartered in June 1947 and on May 27, the bell visited the Rotary Club of Ulannabaatar, Mongolia, which was chartered in January 1995.

The bells' journey will end in Chicago in June 2005 when they ring at the start of RI's Centennial Convention.
