History

The Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island West is one of 56 Clubs in Rotary International District 3450 (Hong Kong, Macau and Mongolia). During an official visit of R.I. President Joaquin Saratossa Cibilis to Hong Kong in November 1953, he found that there were only two Rotary Clubs in Hong Kong, namely, the Rotary of Hong Kong and the Rotary Club of Kowloon. Immediately President Cibilis suggested to the Rotary Club of Hong Kong to sponsor two new clubs, one in each of the Western and Eastern districts of Hong Kong, and two extension committees for the new clubs were appointed. For the Western district, after a few months' work of the committee, a new club emerged under the name of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island West, which held its inaugural meeting on Friday, 26th March 1954. Its application for Rotary International membership was soon approved. The first regular Club meeting was held on Friday, 2nd April 1954 at the Golden Dragon Restaurant (ª÷Às°s®a), officiated by the late C.P. Fung Hon-chu (¶¾º~¬W). Our Club charter was issued by R.I. on 12th April 1954.

On Friday 28th May 1954, a joint charter night was held by the Hong Kong Island West and East Clubs at the Ritz Ballroom, during which Rtn. T.F. Wei, acting on behalf of R.I. Administrative Advisor G.E. Mardnc, formally presented the Rotary Charters to the two new clubs, and a 'birth certificate' to each and every charter member of the two clubs. This marked the birth of twins in the same city, the first time in Rotary history.

Territorial Limits

All that of the Island of Hong Kong west of the Eastern Territorial Boundary and North of the Southern Territorial Boundary. The Eastern Territorial Boundary is defined by a line drawn between the Victoria Peak and the Queen Victoria Street. This boundary shall travel along Queen Victoria Street North Eastwards until it reaches Victoria Harbour. The Southern Territorial Boundary is defined by a line drawn between the Victoria Peak and the Junction of Pokfulam/Mount Davis Road; this boundary shall travel along Mount Davis Road Westwards until it meets Victoria Road, and the boundary shall travel further from this point in a straight line up to where the Western Harbour Boundary meets the Hong Kong Island and any further extension thereof.

In 1979 when we sponsored the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Northwest and subsequently when the Northwest Club sponsored the City Northwest and the Mid-Level Clubs, we allowed them to share our territories but without further relinquishment. Most recently in 1993 we sponsored our latest extension Club of The Peak, making a total of five Clubs in our big family.

Meetings

The Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island West has been holding its regular weekly club meetings every Friday of the week except for public holidays since its formation in 1954. At present, the Club holds its regular meetings at the Hong Kong Bankers Club at 1:00 p.m., with a 30-minute fellowship session prior to the meeting. The electronic club bulletin "Westary" is published monthly.

Membership

The Club started with 30 charter members. However, as time goes by, some of them left the Club either for personal reasons or otherwise. To date, only 2 charter members remain with the Club, they are PP Lee Hong Tong (§õº~©¾) & PP Daniel S.C. Koo (¥j³Ó²»). Throughout the years, the membership grew steadily with some minor fluctuations at times. At present, we have 50 Active Members and 1 Honorary Member.

Projects and Programs

In the past 55 years, we carried out numerous projects and programs, and it would be lengthy to list them all. However, there are a number of them worth mentioning:

  • Our Club was the first in the world to conduct its meetings in Cantonese, a local Southern Chinese dialect.
  • Our Club was the first in the world to achieve a total number of Paul Harris Fellow exceeding its membership. The Chairman of the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation presented a citation to our Club in March 1975 to express its appreciation to us as the first Rotary Club in the world to achieve this distinction.
  • In 1972, PP Wong Chung-man (¶À¹|¥Á) was presented the Arch Klumph Award by the Rotary Foundation for his outstanding performance. Since the establishment of the Arch klumph Award in May 1969, only 30 odds Rotarians had received this award, and PP C.M. Wong was the only recipient who was neither an R.I. Official nor a PDG.
  • In 1976, PP Wai Kee-yiu (³°ò³ó) became the 118th recipient in the world to receive the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service.
  • PP Liu Lit-Mo (¹ù¯PªZ) was appointed District Governor of R.I. District 3450 in the Rotary Year 1994-95.
  • On 24 April 1999, we celebrated our 45th Anniversary at the Ritz Carlton Hotel with a grand party attended by all Rotary Dignitary and Rotary Leaders of the R.I. District 3450 and Presidents and representatives from our Sister Clubs from Japan, Hawaii, Malaysia, Taiwan and Philippines.
  • PP Peter Chau (©P´ï¾ö) was appointed DGGR for the years 1995-96 and 1996-97. He was appointed Assistant Governor for the years 1997-98 and 2000-2001.
  • PP Thomas Wong was appointed Assistant Governor of Area 5 in the R.I. District 3450 in the current Rotary Year 2002-2003. He served as the District Treasurer in the Rotary Years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005.
  • PP Lee Hong Tong was awarded the R.I. Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his 51 years of outstanding contribution to Rotary.

In recent years, we have conducted a number of projects in the 4 Avenues of Services:

  • In the Rotary Year 1995-96, our Club worked on a community service project called "Control and Prevention of Noscomial Infection in China", which was supplemented by on-site intensive training program in Hong Kong for mainland Chinese health professionals. The cost for this project was HK$170,000. We also donated books covering the subject of "AIDS" to Medical Colleges in China.
  • In the Rotary Year 1996-97, through the collaboration of the Hong Kong Red Cross, our Club donated 75 metric tons of white rice totaling US$19,400 to more than 3,000 flood victims in 5 cities in the Jilin Province in the northeastern part of China. In the same year, we launched a very successful Matching Grant Project with Rotary Club of Ortigas, Q.C., Philippines, Dist. 3780 in that we donated a total of US$8,000 for a meaningful food subsidy project for 20 local public school children.
  • In the Rotary Year 1997-98, our Club donated, through the collaboration of the Hong Kong Red Cross, HK$150,000 for the building of an up-to-date Medical Clinic in the Kim Shan Village of Lei Kong City of China. In the same year, we sponsored HK$130,000 for the Courteous Police Officers Selection Scheme of the Hong Kong Police Force.
  • In January 1998, our Club held a Joint Charity Spring Night with Shanghai City Officials to raise funds for charity purpose and we also donated a sum of HK$300,000 for a Computer Training Centre in Shanghai.
  • The family of the late Charter President Fung Hon-chu, donated HK$500,000 to the World Wide Fund Hong Kong in the name of C.P. Fung Hon-chu of Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island West for the reinstatement of two bird-watching hides.
  • Since 1999, our Club has organized the Learning2Give Website Design Competition, which aims to help students to learn the latest techniques and tools for designing websites and to install the concept of community service in students as they design websites for non-profit organizations. In the current Rotary Year, 49 students from 16 top-ranked secondary schools participate in the project to design and/or redesign websites for 16 nonprofit organizations. Not only does Learning2Give receive recognition among the local secondary schools, NGOs and the Hong Kong Educational Department, but also financial support from local and multinational companies in Hong Kong. This project won the R.I. Significant Achievement Award in the Rotary Year 2003-2004.
  • In the Rotary Year 2001-02, our Club launched the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island West Online Recruitment Service (ROR). ROR is the first nonprofit, cost-free online recruitment service that takes advantage of the employment opportunities provided by the extensive network of 1.2 million Rotary professionals worldwide.  By harnessing the speed and global reach of the Internet, ROR has designed and developed a powerful recruitment medium, which brings employers and job seekers together and allows them to interact directly for fast, efficient and cost effective recruitment. This project won The Best Vocational Service Award in the Rotary Year 2001-2002.

In the 2006-2007 Rotary Year only 50 Clubs out of a total of 32,000 Rotary Clubs won this prestigious award.

Every year, our Club continuously supports the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island West Hong Chi Morninghope School, our Rotaract Club of United College of Chinese University.
